I woke up to this email yesterday morning from my friend the Rza. He is our doctor in tavi every year and works in the ER at UCLA. Some heavy shit and a strange way to start a day. So many of our worlds are turned upside down with this economy bull shit. But this puts it all into perspective……

Subject: My crazy Sat. night in Downtown L….and my patient

Hey, see the news link below. But this is one of my 5 trauma patients I had on Sat. night in a matter of 2 hrs. It was nuts, but this was the hardest one me and my staff. Worked on her for about 45 min. After a trauma line R. sub clavian, bilateral chest tubes, 3 units of O neg, 4 units of fluids, etc…to find huge SAH, C1 and C2 fx in neck, and multiple pelvis fractures…..so sad. Came in fixed and dilated in PEA. And the guy you see on the news was next to her in the other trauma bed really trashed up but talking at least. The driver peeled him off the windshield of his car. During that trauma code had TWO GSW’s, one was dead on arrival and other had IVC injury. He went to the OR and made it, but the trauma surgeon left me all alone to deal with these two USC students. It was hard to made these decisions of how far do I keep going with someone that is so young and healthy. I had nightmares that night. I tried to call the mother 5 times during the code to update her but no luck. Now I see her on the news all the time and its like hunting me…I think I am going to phone her and tell her at least her daughter did not suffer that the trauma was so sudden that she was out on impact. Not sure if that will help her deal a little better. But feel so bad for her family and the whole campus at USC is in shock.
